Background of the Study
Access to credit is fundamental for the growth and sustainability of small businesses, which are the backbone of economic development. In Nigeria, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face significant hurdles in obtaining formal credit due to stringent lending criteria, high interest rates, and collateral requirements. Limited credit access restricts their ability to invest in technology, expand operations, and generate employment, thereby stifling overall economic growth (Akinola, 2023).

Recent policy initiatives and financial innovations have aimed to bridge this credit gap by introducing microfinance schemes, digital lending platforms, and government-backed loan guarantees. These efforts are intended to improve the flow of credit to SMEs, facilitating entrepreneurial growth and promoting economic diversification. Empirical studies indicate that when small businesses gain easier access to credit, they are better able to overcome financial constraints, leading to increased productivity and competitiveness (Ike, 2024). However, despite these initiatives, a substantial number of SMEs continue to rely on informal lending channels, which often entail high costs and limited accountability.

The effective mobilization of credit for small business growth is critical for reducing unemployment and fostering innovation. Improved credit access not only empowers entrepreneurs but also contributes to a more inclusive financial system. In Nigeria, where economic growth is heavily reliant on the SME sector, addressing credit constraints can have far-reaching implications for poverty reduction and economic resilience. This study investigates the impact of credit access on the growth of small businesses by examining lending practices, credit availability, and the performance outcomes of SMEs. The objective is to identify the key determinants of credit accessibility and propose strategies that can facilitate sustainable SME growth (Akinola, 2023; Ike, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of credit for small business development, many SMEs in Nigeria still face significant challenges in accessing formal financing. A primary problem is the overly stringent lending environment characterized by high collateral demands and prohibitive interest rates, which effectively exclude a large segment of potential entrepreneurs (Akinola, 2023). This restrictive credit environment forces SMEs to depend on informal financing options that are often unreliable and expensive. Moreover, the limited outreach of formal financial institutions in rural and underserved areas exacerbates the problem, resulting in regional disparities in business growth.

Another challenge is the inadequate assessment of SME creditworthiness by financial institutions. Traditional lending models, which are often based on extensive credit history and substantial collateral, do not align well with the realities of small businesses in Nigeria. As a result, many promising ventures are unable to secure the necessary capital for expansion, innovation, or operational improvements (Ike, 2024). This credit gap not only hampers individual business growth but also limits overall economic development, as SMEs play a crucial role in job creation and poverty reduction.

These persistent credit access issues call for a comprehensive evaluation of the factors impeding SME financing. Without addressing these barriers, Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem may continue to underperform, leading to slower economic growth and sustained levels of unemployment. This study aims to address these issues by examining lending practices, identifying systemic obstacles, and proposing policy and institutional reforms to improve credit access for small businesses in Nigeria.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the relationship between credit access and SME growth in Nigeria.

  • To identify barriers within the lending environment that hinder SME financing.

  • To propose reforms and innovative solutions to enhance credit access for small businesses.

Research Questions

  • How does access to formal credit affect the growth of SMEs in Nigeria?

  • What are the main obstacles preventing SMEs from obtaining credit?

  • What measures can improve the alignment of lending practices with SME needs?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Improved access to formal credit is positively correlated with SME growth.

  • H₂: Stringent lending criteria negatively impact the ability of SMEs to secure financing.

  • H₃: Innovative credit assessment methods enhance credit access and business performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the credit access challenges faced by SMEs in Nigeria from 2020 to 2025, analyzing urban and rural disparities. Limitations include data availability and the rapidly changing financial environment.

Definitions of Terms

  • Credit Access: The ease with which businesses can obtain financing from formal institutions.

  • Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs): Businesses characterized by limited scale and resources.

  • Lending Environment: The overall framework and conditions under which credit is extended.
